Replicability in Brazilian Political Science Journals: verifiability, robustness, repeatability, and generalization of articles with open data (2015–2025)

There is a gap in the practical understanding of replicability in the social sciences that hinders editorial reforms and the consistent adoption of open data policies. This project assesses the replicability of quantitative articles published between 2015 and 2025 in Brazilian journals in the social sciences and applied social sciences that have data-sharing policies. The focus is on four dimensions: verifiability (reproducing results with the same data/code), robustness (sensitivity analyses), repeatability (new data to reproduce the effect), and generalization (tests in other contexts and methods). The initiative is coordinated by Ricardo Ceneviva and Ivan Fernandes (member group CPL) and was selected in the BrRN’s first call for support for metascience projects.

Challenges of Open Science practices: assessing equity across different settings and activities aimed at promoting high-quality research

Reproducible and high-quality research also needs to take place in an environment that is more open to the participation of all people. This project aims to map the landscape of equity and research integrity within Open Science itself. The project is coordinated by Rafaelly Stavale (BrRN Ambassador) and was selected in the 1st call for support for BrRN metascience projects.

Replicability Guide for the Open Data Index (ODI) Cidades

Publicly sharing data and methodologies is often not sufficient to ensure reproducibility. This project will map each stage of the ODI Cidades, a methodology for assessing the level of openness and data quality in municipalities, from data collection to analysis and publication, systematizing and externalizing the entire process of using this tool. The project was selected in the 1st call for support for metascience projects by the BrRN and is coordinated by Haydée Svab (Executive Director of the member organization Open Knowledge Brasil) and carried out by Edilaine Santos (Advocacy and Research Analyst at Open Knowledge Brasil).

Evaluating the impact of conflicts of interest, questionable research practices, and spin on the results of Brazilian psychotherapy clinical trials

This literature review aims to describe the landscape of Brazilian clinical trials in the field of psychotherapy with respect to research practices that have a high potential to bias published results, potentially limiting their reliability and reproducibility. The project is coordinated by Daniel Fatori (LAREPsi member group) and was selected in the 1st call for support for metascience projects by the BrRN.

Assessment of the perception of and adherence to Open Science policies and practices at a teaching and research institution in the state of São Paulo

This project aims to map a unit of one of Brazil’s largest universities with respect to open and reproducible science practices, through the review of quantitative indicators as well as questionnaires and interviews with its researchers. The project is coordinated by Isis Paiva Trajano (a BrRN ambassador) and was selected in the BrRN’s 1st call for support for metascience projects.

Diagnosis of Open Science Practices in Scientific Articles from the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre

This study aims to map the extent to which researchers at the institution adhere to transparency practices in research, such as the open sharing of data, protocols, and other materials. The project is coordinated by Michael Andrades (member institution HCPA) and was selected in the BrRN’s 1st call for support for metascience projects.

Transparency, replicability, and reproducibility in the Brazilian Social Sciences: mapping, causes, and consequences

The project begins with a survey of transparency indicators in the fields of Political Science and Sociology, followed by an analysis of the factors associated with greater transparency and the impact of these actions. This study will be complemented by a graduate-level course. The project is coordinated by Bruno Schaefer (member journal Dados) and was selected in the 1st BrRN call for support for metascience projects.

Panorama of preclinical systematic reviews conducted by Brazilian researchers

Systematic reviews are tools that allow for the qualitative evaluation of a research field, but the quality and reproducibility of these studies can also be questioned. This review of reviews aims to describe the landscape of the use of systematic reviews of preclinical experiments in Brazil. The project is coordinated by Matheus Gallas-Lopes (BRISA member group) and was selected in the 1st call for support for BrRN metascience projects.

Recommendations for open and reproducible science practices for graduate programs

We are adapting the recommendations sent to the CAPES DAV as suggestions for actions that PPG coordinators can implement independently of the evaluation processes. The goal is for this list to include practical and easily accessible recommendations for the entire diversity of PPGs that exists in the country.

The first proposed version of this document will be released soon for internal review by our members. Follow us on Zulip and in our newsletters.

Translation and adaptation of the UKRN Primers

We are currently translating and adapting the content of the UKRN Primers (https://www.ukrn.org/primers/) to the Brazilian context. We are starting with the topics of data sharing, code and open source software, preprints, open access, pre-registration and rights retention. The first texts are expected to be released in May 2025.
